Introduction to AIMS English
AIMS English is an approach to second language teaching that embraces the principle of communication at its heart.
AIMS (Authentic Immersion Multilevel Systems) English provides the teacher with structured systems, all communicative in nature, that are flexible enough to accommodate contexts of learning and the teacher’s own style. Within the framework of the systems, students receive plenty of comprehensible input, are encouraged to negotiate with each other and the instructor for meaning, and learn content of interest to them, all while being immersed in English.
AIMS English can enhance what a program is already doing or can provide a framework for new programs. The systems are easy to learn, easy to teach and easy to use, and can add depth and density to any curriculum. AIMS English trainings are tailored to each individual program’s needs.
- The systems:
- Attribute Cards for speaking and listening
- Message Design for writing
- Book Club for reading
- Interactive Journals for writing
- Authentic Content:
- Content that is meaningful and relevant to the students, honors what the students already know and is a vehicle for learning English.
- Planning:
- Planning that incorporates needed skills and standards and includes students’ questions and ideas.
The developers of AIMS English, Barbara Vaille and Jennifer QuinnWilliams teach, train teachers, and coach teachers in Adult ELL programs in Denver. They have also adapted and used the systems successfully with children, as have many teachers they have trained. In addition, they train children’s Oral Language Development teachers.
